Experience:

Paulo Correia holds a PhD degree on Electrical and Computers Engineering, from IST, on the field of Video Analysis and Image Communications, an M.Sc. degree in the field of Mobile Communication Systems Simulation, and an Engineering degree in the field of Telecommunications. His current research interests are in the areas of image and video analysis and processing, namely biometrics recognition, forensic biometrics, road pavement surface image analysis, intelligent transportation systems, video segmentation, objective evaluation of segmentation quality, underwater image analysis..

Participation in many national and international research projects. Examples:

- Integrating Biometrics and Forensics for the Digital Age, COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), COST IC 1106 (2012-2016) – Vice-Chair; WP leader; STSM coordinator;

- QUIS-CAMPI: Biometric Recognition in Surveillance Environments, IT/LA (2014-2015);

Coordinator of projects:

- Secure Multimodal Biometric Recognition System using Distributed Source Coding (PTDC/EEA-TEL/098755/2008), FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (2010-2013);

Author or co-author of 4 book chapters, 14 international scientific journal papers and over 80 international conference contributions.

 

In 2013 Paulo Correia was General Chairman of the International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF), and he was Technical Programme Chairman of IWBF in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

In 2004 he was General Co-Chairman of the International Workshop on Image Analysis for Multimedia Interactive Services (WIAMIS’2004) and in 2007 he was Program Chair of the Picture Coding Symposium (PCS’2007).

He was member of the organizing committees of the following international conferences: European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO) in 2014 and 2018; IEEE International Workshop on Quality of Multimedia Experience (QoMEX) in 2016; 3DTV-Com in 2015; International Conference on Image Processing Theory, Tools and Applications (IPTA) in 2016.

 

He is member of the Advisory Board of the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP). From 2004 to 2008 he was an elected member of EURASIP’s Board of Directors.

From 2009 to 2015 he was the Portuguese representative at the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) domain committee of the COST European Framework.

He has evaluated research projects for several European Commission programs.

He is IEEE senior member.

 

He is associate editor for the journals: Elsevier Signal Processing Journal (since 2005) e IET Biometrics (since 2013). He was associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (2006-2014).

 

He joined IST in 1990, where he now holds the position of Assistant Professor, having lectured several subjects in the areas of Telecommunication Fundamentals, Telecommunication Systems (both guided and wireless systems), Mobile Communications Systems, Computer Networks, and being responsible for a MSc course on Digital Image Processing. He has supervised many final graduation and MSc projects, and been part of many project and MSc evaluation committees. Supervisor of the following PhD Thesis:

- “Crack Detection and Characterization in Flexible Road Pavements using Digital Image Processing”, Henrique José Monteiro Oliveira, PhD concluded in 2013;

- “Light-field imaging based biometric recognition”, Alireza Sepas-Moghaddam, under development, expected conclusion: 2018, co-supervised with Prof. Fernando Pereira;

- “Soft Biometrics Recognition using Light-Field Cameras”, Tanmay Tulsidas Verlekar, under development, expected conclusion: 2018, co-supervised with Prof. Luís Ducla Soares.

In 1989/90 he was a Teaching Assistant in the Informatics department of ISCTE, having lectured programming languages, and information systems subjects.

In 1988/89 he has worked for the Portuguese Telecom operator, on ISDN and on the development of routing algorithms.

Other Information:

Paulo Correia won the 1989 Marconi and Alcatel awards for the best Telecommunications student graduating from IST.

Distinguished with an ''Outstanding Associate Editor Award'' for his cooperation with the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology  journal, during meeting of the IEEE T-CSVT Editorial Board, held in New Orleans, on May 28, 2007.
